Assignments

I'll be teaching two sections of Physics during Spring Semester 2008. To determine whether you are in fact enrolled in one of George Barrick's sections of this course, compare the course information in your schedule to see whether your section number of PHYS 102 has either of the call numbers (20658) or (20657). Section (20658) meets at 9:10 MWF in Betzler Auditorium. Section (20657) meets at 13:50 MWF in Betzler 114.

Text

The text for Principles of Physics (PHYS 102) is the sixth edition of College Physics by Wilson/Buffa/Lou (ISBN 0-131-49579-8). It's available from from the Walsh Bookstore (for $170.00 new/127.50 used). Most students of this course will need to register separately for one of the laboratory sections. The text for the lab. is available only from Walsh bookstore ($22.70 new/$17.05 used). Another good source for the textbook (but not the lab. book) is Barnes & Noble. When using e-commerce sites, you'll need to wait a couple days for shipping. Keep in mind that Walsh Bookstore will buy back relatively undamaged books in May at approximately 15% of the original retail price, and so it's not a bad idea to keep your books in good condition.

Calculators

A scientific calculator is recommended for the course. The recommended calculators are the TI-30XA, TI-30X IIs, TI-34 II and TI-36X. These vary in price from $13.95 up to $29.95. The recommended calculators may be used on tests and on the Final Examination. Calculators, cell phones, PDA's or laptop computers that might either store text notes or host wireless network links may not be used during quizzes or tests.

Software

The common spreadsheet tool Excel from Microsoft can be a handy tool for statistical computations. Some extra functionality can be had by adding the PHStat2 tool menu. The software package Mathematica is another common (and useful) tool for students in many academic settings.

Quizzes

One component of the grade in the class is quiz scores. Quizzes will take place frequently as part of the class period. It's a good idea to keep up on the class schedule and class assignments, so as to be prepared whenever quizzes occur. Something on the order of 12 quizzes at 10 points each will be recorded during the course of the semester, though only the highest 10 of these grades will be used for each student's quiz score.

Homework

Daily homework from the assignment sheet will not be turned in for class credit, though it is these examples that will be covered every day in class. Five short homework assignments that require more careful write-ups will be turned in for 20 points each. These assignments may involve some graphing and numerical computations.

Final Examination

The final examination meets on Monday April 21, 2008 in the same locations where lectures were held. The morning class (20658) takes its examination at 08:00. The afternoon class (20675) writes the examination at 15:00. All of the information presented here, as well as more detailed things regarding grading policies etc. can be found in the class syllabus, the class schedule and class assignments.

PHYS 102 Quiz Archive

All of the quizzes will be posted here within a few days after they've occurred in class. All students are encouraged to look through these old quizzes as a study guide.
